Research!

Ok....so throughout this project I've looked around for manufacturing techniques on producing a USB stick (yes I know that's not the right way!).  I've done this because it felt that it was something that i needed to do for this assignment but the truth is it's not how I've thought...

Luckily I havent found anything in my research in terms of specifics for the production of a USB memory stick; theres been one YouTube video (that I didn't bother watching) and thats pretty much it and so before i even started looking at other designs available I decided to look at two things:

1. What do I know already/what can I discover that can be employed in producing my prototype product.

2. What 'interests' me? Look, in general terms, at what I want my idea to be around and let the information and imagery motivate and evolve my ideas - and then constantly evolve and review them!

What I've thought about is how I can produce my prototype product...what is available to me?

This assignment requires the use of Corel Draw and Creo ProEngineer.  Within Uni I can use these programs on the Laser Cutters, CNC machines, rapid pro machines.

As I know this I've thought about how I can utilise these processes but also I'm aware of other processes that I can do within uni....

Paint Spray Booths - I can use this for finishing parts of my prototype product, the thing i need to bare in mind is how...do i need plastic primers? if I use card or wood do will i need 'sand and seal' etc

Plastics room - Silicone casting can be part of my process of production.  Could I use Resin?  The application of resin means that in it's 'forming' it has an exothermic reaction and does produce a lot of heat, because of this I wont use resin in my this protype.

Metal work - I could create a mould and cast part of my usb stick but my main concern is weight and creating a very visually distinct product and using metal just does not match my 'flow of thoights' especially given that I can replicate the effect of metal within the spray booths.

Sand Blasting - now this one is an interesting one!  I've looked at other plastics available that i could use on the laser cutters.  I could use any colour, and opacity or even visual effect plastics, such as ones that have glitter within them but sand blasting has created a new dynamic for me...
The USB board has a small LED on it and sand blastic clear acrylic creates a frosted look that will illuminate when the light on the USB comes on....i think this would look amazing and is a simple but highly effective visual method; and given that i want to use this project potentially in schools, keeping things simple and cheap but maximising effect is very important to me.

Hand tools and general workspace - because the materials available to me are so vast I'm not gonna list everything that i could potentially use BUT i can state that each time i walk around and visit the stores i'll keep my eyes open for inspiration! even if that involves looking at other peoples work!

 IDEA STIMULATION....

When I started looking at the internet for ideas I started to look at sites that would emotionally motivate me...one site is Formula 1.com

The site is stylish, modern and very fresh...literally cutting edge.

I have created a mood board surrounding the visually aspects of the site that have given me a lot of thought....

Another site that has been of key importance is the actually F1 in schools site....

The site shows examples of work previously completed but to gain access to the full features and technical data etc you have to be a paid subscriber (not something im gonna do on my budget!) but the site offered me an oppertunity to gain a real feel for the project and essentially how it impacts in schools that use this within their curriculum.

Towards the end of my project, once i had a final design ready, i decided to search for F1 USB sticks....

despite me having a pretty much final idea decided, i wanted to check out what was available and to see if my design was actually unique.  Fortunately i could not find anything close to my design but that was my intention...i wanted to follow the path of letting my design be led by my initial research.
